Prohibited items & dangerous goods
Some items cannot be taken onboard an aircraft as they have the potential to be used to harm other passengers and crew.
These include:
- prohibited items
- weapons
- dangerous goods
- powders, liquids, aerosols and gels (international only)
If these items are identified, you will be asked to check them in, find a suitable storage location or surrender ownership of the item.
If you are unsure if an item is allowed onboard, check with your airline or leave it at home. In some circumstances, you may be able to pack the item in your checked baggage, but you will need to check this with your airline.

Prohibited items
To ensure air travel remains safe, there are a number of items that are prohibited from being carried in your carry-on luggage because they present an aviation security risk.
Examples of prohibited items that cannot be taken on board an aircraft as carry-on baggage include:
- sporting goods
- kitchen utensils
- tools
- sharp items
- blunt objects
- flammable and household goods
A list of prohibited items can be found on the Australian Government's TravelSECURE website.
Each airline operates under its own Conditions of Carriage, which may indicate what you cannot take on board or pack in your checked baggage. You should check with your airline if you are unsure whether you can take a particular item on board.
You will be asked to surrender any prohibited items found in your hand luggage when passing through security screening. Failure to surrender an item when requested will result in you being unable to pass through to the terminal’s secure area and to travel.
All items surrendered at the security screening points at Perth Airport are auctioned online throughout the year, with all proceeds raised going charity. Auctions take place approximately four times a year. Keep an eye out on the Perth Airport Facebook page or the Ross's Auctions website for the next online auction.
Dangerous goods
There are some items that aren’t meant to fly at all as they pose a health or safety risk when transported by air.
They range from the obvious - such as explosives and flammable liquids - to seemingly innocuous everyday items that can cause problems if not handled correctly, such as aerosols, batteries and even hand sanitizer.

Powders, liquids, aerosols and gels
International travellers are subject to limits on the quantity of liquids, aerosols, gels and certain powders you can carry onboard an international flight.
Liquid, aerosol or gel items must be in containers of 100ml / 100g or less. Inorganic powders (e.g. talc, sand) must not exceed 350g.
