Monkey Mia

Monkey Mia’s abundant dolphin population and sparkling blue waters have made it a tourist favourite. Visitors flock to the bay to interact with dolphins and watch the daily feedings take place. If you love wildlife and are after a unique, beach holiday, then Monkey Mia is the way to go.

Where will I find Monkey Mia?

Start your WA driving holiday with a car hire from Perth Airport before heading nine hours north of Perth, along State Route 60 and National Route 1, where you will find the beautiful Monkey Mia on the Peron Peninsula in the Shark Bay World Heritage Area.

There are accommodation options in Monkey Mia to the east of the peninsula, as well as in Denham, a town located 25 kilometres to the north east.

See dolphins up close

See the playful bottle nose dolphins closer than ever before in Monkey Mia. There are plenty of opportunities to spot these creatures from the beach and from local cruises.

The bottle nose dolphins usually visit the shores up to three times a day. Travellers can watch the daily feedings when the dolphins make their way in from the bay. You may also spot a dolphin on one of the wildlife cruises of the bay.

Visit the Dolphin Information Centre to learn more about the Monkey Mia dolphins and purchase a few souvenirs.

What else can I see in and around Monkey Mia?

There is more than dolphins to see in Monkey Mia. Car rental in Monkey Mia allows you to visit some stunning, remote beaches, learn about the Indigenous history of the area, and explore other destinations in Shark Bay. Visit Shell Beach, a snow-white beach found 45 kilometres south-east of Denham and made entirely of little cockle shells, or head to Hamelin Pool and learn about the oldest fossils found in the area.

Reserve a 4WD car rental and enjoy a wilderness experience among Francois Peron National Park’s red cliffs and blue waters, found just 10 kilometres from Denham. The region also has impressive wildflowers. Between July and November is the best time to see the flowers blooming.

If you are visiting Denham you can enjoy swimming, fishing and sailing on the still waters. The Little Lagoon is just five kilometres from town, and is perfect for swimming. For an incredible view over the ocean, visit Eagle Bluff lookout. The lookout is just a 20 minute drive from Denham.
