It’s time to rediscover New Zealand

Finally, the wait is over, and we can cross the ditch to say ‘Kia Ora’ again to our Kiwi neighbours.

Spectacular New Zealand sits on just about every holiday destination top 10 list and the great news is that us lucky Aussies have it practically to ourselves right now.

Here’s our pick of unmissable North Island experiences to get you bursting with excitement over the Trans-Tasman travel bubble.

Jump on board Air New Zealand’s non-stop flight from Perth to Auckland (flying six times weekly) and be amazed by these North Island gems.

For our adventurers:

Waitomo Caves

There’s no cave adventure quite like the Waitomo Caves Black Water Rafting Experience. Journey down into this fantastical subterranean world and spend an unforgettable three hours floating in tubes, leaping over waterfalls, and weaving through a glow worm studded wonderland.

Underwater explorers will love diving the Poor Knights Islands. You’ll think you’re on a tropical reef with all the amazing colours and life in this subtropical marine reserve. It’s one of French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau’s favourite dive spots in the world, and ours too!

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Challenge yourself on the 19.4km long Tongariro Alpine Crossing - voted one of the best day hikes in the world. Test your fitness as you trek across the volcanic alpine landscape of this UNESCO Dual World Heritage Park. Be rewarded by spectacular vistas with mountain springs, ancient lava flows, steam vents and the breathtaking Emerald Lakes.

Top tip: As snow and ice covers much of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing during the winter months (May to October), it’s best to book a guided trip through Adrift Tongariro Guiding and Adventure Outdoors Tongariro.

For our chillers:

Cathedral Cove Coromandel

Coromandel is a locals’ favourite and it’s easy to see why. Shrug off those worries as you bask in its natural beauty. Take a spectacular scenic walk amongst the long-lived kauris in the Coromandel Forest Park, kayak to the turquoise lagoon hidden in the centre of Whenuakura Island, or jump one of the many boat tours to the unique and iconic Cathedral Cove, Coromandel

Top tip: Autumn is the prime time to visit the Cathedral Cove. Beat the crowds and go at sunrise or early evening for a more secluded experience.

Hell's Gate Mud Spa

Plunge into Hell’s Gate, New Zealand’s only outdoor mud bath for some serious restoration. The infamous mud and waters of Tikitere have healed Maori warriors for centuries and will undoubtedly soothe and rejuvenate you. When you’re done, walk through the thriving native flora bubbling with geo-thermal activity and experience the Kakahi Falls, the largest hot waterfall in the Southern Hemisphere.

For our culture enthusiasts:

Immerse yourself in the rich Maori culture in Rotorua. Learn about the history, myths and legends of Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley at Te Puia. Book the Geyser by Night Light Trial for a multi-sensory geothermal experience. You can also experience Maori cultural performances and creative arts at Te Puia before ending the day with a steamy hangi. Extend your stay with a night in the Tamaki Māori Village, sleeping beneath the shelter of the ancient Tawa forest.

Top tip: Carving is an important art form in Maori culture and has been used to pass down stories from generation to generation. If you’re feeling creative, you can carve your own story at Hell’s Gate with the guidance of skilled carvers.
