Perth Airport receives a 100 per cent rating for its commitment to environmental, social and governance processes
GRESB is an international process that rates the environmental, social and governance performance of major infrastructure assets.
Perth Airport CEO Kevin Brown said that the 100 per cent score was a phenomenal result.
“Despite the ongoing challenges of the Covid-19, pandemic and the continuous recovery efforts of our business and partners, I am proud that the Perth Airport Team has continued to focus on the importance of sustainability with the understanding that it gives us business continuity outcomes when faced with arising challenges.
“This approach has facilitated our recent 100 per cent GRESB result which benchmarks the performance of infrastructure assets around the globe.
“When we were first benchmarked by GRESB in 2018 we scored an acceptable 76 per cent, but we made a commitment to be a world leader in sustainability.
“In 2019 we undertook a comprehensive materiality assessment which determined the sustainability issues which were important to our business and key stakeholders. This led to the release of our Environment, Social, People, Governance (ESPG) Strategy in 2021 – a framework that brings sustainability into focus across all aspects of our business.
“Our targets key program areas are Energy and Carbon, Biodiversity & Habitat, Water Management, Water Sensitivity, Diversity & Inclusion, Indigenous Engagement, Sustainability Development, Safety and Climate Resilience.
“We have looked across all aspects of our business to manage and reduce impacts across the Perth Airport estate and beyond.
“It informs our planning and monitoring and allows us to grow responsibly in a way that delivers positive outcomes for our team members, customers, investors, and the communities in which the airport operates.
“One of our key commitments is ‘no net loss of biodiversity’ for all aviation and development projects.
“No net loss of biodiversity means that any loss of natural habitat caused by Perth Airport projects on the airport estate will be replaced through either land purchase or the restoration of degraded land, so that the total area of natural habitat increases.
“Despite our offset strategy, Perth Airport’s initial focus is always on reduction of impacts to avoid loss of native vegetation in the first instance.
“This approach has worked well for the New Runway Project where the impact area since the project received Federal Government approval has been reduced significantly through efficient design and a smart build concept to ensure that maximum native vegetation can be retained on site.
“The same approach was taken to minimise impacts to Munday Swamp, which is an important Aboriginal heritage site. Again, smart design reduced the impacts significantly from the original concept developed 30 years ago to the current design which avoids impacts to the Munday Swamp water body.
“This is an example of how we will approach our growth and as we start to deliver new and important aviation infrastructure such as Perth’s new runway.
We will continue to challenge our team in all areas of our operations to maintain our 100 per cent approval.”
The score sees Perth Airport maintain the No. 1 ranking amongst participating Oceania airports and “Sector Leader Status” in Transport by GRESB.
