Perth Airport committed to carbon reduction

15 September, 2017
Perth Airport has achieved the Airports Council International (ACI) Level 1 ‘Mapping’ Certification for Airport Carbon Accreditation.

Airport Carbon Accreditation recognises and accredits the efforts of an airport to manage and reduce their carbon emissions. There are four levels of certification: 'Mapping', 'Reduction', 'Optimisation' and 'Neutrality'.

“The management of our carbon emissions is a long-term commitment and supports the sustainable and effective environmental management of Perth Airport,” said Kevin Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Perth Airport.

To achieve Level 1’Mapping’, Perth Airport was required to determine the direct or indirect emissions sources, as defined by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, within its operational boundary, then collect data and calculate the annual carbon emissions and compile a carbon footprint report.

Perth Airport engaged an independent third party to verify the report before submission, to ensure that the carbon footprint calculation was in accordance with ISO14064 and accreditation requirements.

“Continual improvement in environmental management is integral to the way we do business, and in partnership with our airline and business partners we are now focussed on reducing our carbon footprint by implementing initiatives to save energy and increase efficiency,” said Mr Brown.

“We already actively manage noise, water, soil and air pollution on our estate and we recognise the impacts of climate change.  We also strive to control greenhouse gas emissions that relate to energy use in our facilities and aircraft operations

“As Perth Airport operates 24/7, the energy efficiency of our buildings, along with the efficiency of aircraft and vehicle traffic are key considerations for managing environmental impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions,” he continued.

The ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation is the only institutionally-endorsed, carbon management certification standard for airports. It is a program with four levels, mapping a process for airports to becoming cleaner and more efficient, starting with having a carbon footprint independently verified in accordance with ISO14064 (Greenhouse Gas Accounting).
