Celebrating 50 years of Singapore Airlines' services to Perth
05 April, 2017
Perth Airport celebrated the milestone of 50 years of Singapore Airlines services to Perth today, with an impressive water cannon salute to welcome the inaugural visit of the Airline’s latest Airbus A350-900 aircraft.
“Over the past 50 years, Perth Airport and Singapore Airlines have maintained a strong partnership that has seen Singapore become Western Australia’s third biggest international visitor market, injecting $246 million into the WA economy in visitor expenditure alone last year,” said Kevin Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Perth Airport.
“The special relationship between the people of Singapore and Western Australia is underlined by the fact that more than 450,000 passengers travelled to and from Singapore last year. Visitors from Singapore love coming here and Perth is always ready to welcome them. It’s not just an important economic connection – there’s a strong social and cultural bond,” said Mr Brown.
Singapore, with its diverse culture and fantastic leisure attractions - is also a favourite destination for Western Australians to visit which has only been enhanced by Singapore Airlines over the past 50 years.
“This is a significant milestone for Singapore Airlines and we look forward to developing our partnership to grow aviation travel between Perth and Singapore,” said Mr Brown.
The Singapore Airlines and SilkAir network provides Western Australians with access to 102 destinations in 34 countries.
In April 1967, under the Malaysia-Singapore Airlines brand, Singapore Airlines operated its inaugural flight to Perth on a de Havilland Comet that seated 70 passengers; 20 in First Class and 50 in Economy.
Currently, Singapore Airlines operates four daily services between Perth and Singapore in either an A330-300 or B777-200 aircraft, providing Western Australians and Singaporeans more travel options.
To celebrate the milestone, Singapore Airlines' latest Airbus A350-900 also made a special flyover of Perth city at 1,500ft shortly after the aircraft departed Perth Airport.
